In the days before Imran Khan set off to meet President Trump at the White House, the Pakistani government launched an eye-catching crackdown on Islamist groups and terror financing at home.

Hafiz Saeed, the alleged mastermind of the Mumbai terror attacks in 2008 and a man living freely in Pakistan despite the $10 million bounty on his head, was placed under house arrest. Islamist charities linked to Saeed, founder of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist group, were shut down.

To underpin the headline-grabbing arrest of Saeed, the Pakistani military announced an even more sweeping reform. Pakistan’s 30,000 madrassas, or Islamic religious schools, were to be brought under state control.
