Hangu : Haji Misri Khan Orakzai, a senior journalist of Hangu, was gun-downed in the 14 September’s early morning by multiple unidentified assailants who fled the scene after the attack. Reports indicate that prior to his death, Misri Orakzai, who was also head of Hangu Union of Journalist (HUJ), received multiple death threats from militants who demanded he stop reporting about their activities.
Eye-witnesses said that Orakzai was shot dead on 14 September’s early as he was entering the Hangu press club. “Three armed men opened fire at Misri Khan Orkazai as he reached the entrance of Hangu press club around 6 ‘o clock morning,” said Saiduddin Orakzai, a local journalist . Orakzai, 50 , left behind nine children and a widow, was in the profession since 1994 and known as a founder of Journalist in Hangu. He ran the famous Misri Khan News Agency in Hangu and was presently associated with Daily Ausaf and Daily Express, according to the local media-persons.
Misri Orakzai’s son, Usman Ghani, said to the media that his father had not enmity with anyone in the area and he might be targeted due to his professional journalistic activities. It is pertinent to mention that Hangu borders with Orakzai and Kurram tribal regions where a military operation against the defunct Teheek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) , is going on by the military . Misri Orakzai was previously attacked thrice but survived.
Condemning killing of Misri Khan Orakzai, senior journalist and President of HUJ , the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has demanded from the government to ensure arrest of the culprits without further delay.
PFUJ in statement also demanded from the government of Khyber-Pukhtunkhwa to compensate the deceased’s family . PFUJ noted with deep concern over the apathy of the government in ensuring protection of life and property of the journalists, adding that this incident once again made it clear that the life of the media persons in the conflict areas is not safe and killing of them has become order of the day.
